It is cold, two layers of cloths are not enough, and there was snow when I landed. Although it disappeared immediately once it hit the ground, it was enough to give me, from the beginning on, the perfect Stockholm-winter-feeling! After I landed, a Swedish girl who I met three years ago in Holland – Raheleh -, picked me up from the airport. We took the metro to my place, dumped my bags and went straight back to the city center, where we met a couple of her friends in a very fancy bar (Hotelet). Apparently Fridaynight is dress-to-impress night in Stockholm, so I felt a tiny bit underdressed in my I-just-got-out-of-the-airplane-outfit in between all the ties and high heels. But the fire was warm, the wine was good and after two hours my cheeks had a very rosy glow.
When I arrived back in my room, and wanted to crash in my bed, I realized I didn’t have any curtains… And not only curtains for my window, but I had a ‘general curtain problem’, since there was also one missing for my shower! But I will try to find some creative solution for it, and for the rest my room is perfect for two months. I got my own bathroom, and the sleep/living room is quiet big.
Because of the curtain-problem, I woke up this morning at 8:30 with the sun in my face. Unfortunately I made the mistake of thinking ‘oh well there is sun so I don’t need my hat and just two layers of cloths is enough’, because when I walked outside I was freezing (-3 degrees)! So my day was a bit cold… But the city is great, really beautiful. I walked around for 5 hours, and saw already some interesting things. Including a half naked guy dancing near the ice skating place on some radio music and the change of the guards at the Royal Palace.
For the rest, I simply walked and walked and walked, tried some Swedish cake (no, haven’t tried the kladkaka yet!) and I am already addicted to a new drink – Glõgg. It’s like glűhwein, but then with the taste of almonds and raisins. Really nice!
And now I just got back from having dinner with Aart, another Dutchie who is studying here at Karolinska Institutet. He gave me some more tips of where to go to and what to see. So nope, I don’t think I will have any problem living here for 2 months!
